FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A lift off hinge consists of two leaves – one fixed to the vehicle body and one fixed to the door or panel – connected by a pin. Unlike a standard fixed hinge where the pin is permanently retained, a lift off hinge allows the door or panel leaf to be lifted clear of the pin when the door is fully open. This means the door or panel can be completely removed without unfastening any fixings, and reattached just as quickly by lowering it back onto the pin.
This makes lift off hinges well suited to commercial vehicle applications where doors or panels need to be removed regularly for access, loading, maintenance, or bodywork configuration changes.
-
Both are lift off hinges, but they differ in construction and application.
Torpedo hinges have a die cast body and a 10mm stainless steel pin. The torpedo name refers to the cylindrical, barrel-shaped knuckle profile. The stainless steel pin provides good corrosion resistance, making torpedo hinges suitable for demanding commercial environments. They are available in left-hand and right-hand configurations.
Moulded hinges are also available in left-hand and right-hand configurations. For specific material and dimensional details on moulded hinges, contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk before ordering.
-
A dropside safety hinge is designed specifically for dropside flatbed applications on commercial vehicles. Dropsides are the hinged panels on the sides of flatbed trucks and trailers that fold down to allow loading from the side.
A dropside safety hinge incorporates a feature that prevents the dropside from accidentally disengaging or falling when in the raised position, which is a safety requirement in commercial vehicle bodywork. It is a lift off type, allowing the dropside to be fully removed when required, while retaining secure engagement during normal use.
-
The LH and RH designation refers to the hand of the hinge – that is, which side the knuckle or pin assembly is positioned on when the hinge is installed. This determines which way the door or panel swings and how the two leaves align when the door is closed. Fitting the wrong hand will result in the hinge leaves misaligning or the door opening in the wrong direction, so it is important to identify the correct hand for your application before ordering.
To determine which hand you need, stand facing the door from the outside. If the hinge is on the left, you need a left-hand hinge. If it is on the right, you need a right-hand hinge. If you are unsure, contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk with details of your application.

Yes. The range includes hinges in small and large sizes to suit different door and panel weights and dimensions. Torpedo hinges feature a 10mm stainless steel pin.
