FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Step lights are LED lights fitted at entry and exit points to illuminate steps and the ground around them, helping drivers and operators get in and out of a vehicle safely in the dark or in poorly lit depots. They sit within Stedall’s wider lighting range, alongside interior lights, exterior lights and marker lights.
Beyond steps themselves, the same low-profile lights are well suited to door shuts, lockers, under-seat areas and ambient lighting. Fitting step lighting at the build stage produces a cleaner installation than retrofitting, and supports safe access alongside correctly specified steps and grab handles. For more on reducing access-related injuries, see Stedall’s guide on preventing slips, trips and falls on commercial vehicles.
-
Stedall’s step lights are available in different LED colours, including white, blue and red. White provides clear, general illumination of the step and ground. Blue and red are often used for lower-level or ambient lighting where a softer light is wanted, for example to mark a step edge without a bright white spill.
The colour choice depends on the effect required and where the light is fitted. For help selecting the right colour for an application, contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk. -
A low profile step light has a slim, shallow body designed to fit where depth is limited. Stedall supplies both a low profile range and a very low profile version, the latter with reduced depth and increased output, making it suitable for tight spaces such as door shuts, lockers and under seats while still working well as a step light.
The very low profile lights have a polycarbonate body with a clear lens and three LEDs, are surface fit, and come supplied with fixing screws and a gasket. The slim low profile range is surface mount, supplied with grey and white endcaps and a gasket. For the dimensions of a specific light, contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk.
-
This depends on the light. Stedall’s slim low profile LED range (the 549 series) is IP67 rated and is capable of continuous operation at 32 volts, making it suitable for exposed positions on commercial vehicles. IP and voltage ratings are not identical across every step light, so the rating for a specific light should be checked on its data sheet.
For confirmation of the IP rating and operating voltage of a particular step light before ordering, contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk.

Stedall publishes a lux reading and an Ra (CRI) figure for most of its lighting, rather than a lumen figure. Lux measures the intensity of light landing on a surface at a set distance, usually one metre, so it tells you how well lit the step will actually be. Lumens, by contrast, describe the total light a source emits, not how it performs at range. As an example, the slim low profile light reads 36 lux at one metre.
Ra, also called CRI, is a 0 to 100 scale describing how accurately a light renders colour, with higher figures being more true to life. Around 80 Ra is the common baseline for good colour rendering in commercial lighting. For the lux and Ra figures of a specific step light, refer to its data sheet or contact Stedall on 01454 319524 or at sales@stedall.co.uk.
